Excellent Food, Questionable Neighborhood
My experience at this restaurant was marked by excellent food, although the surrounding neighborhood felt a bit questionable. I wish they offered fresh herbs with their meals, as this would significantly enhance the flavors. The service was impeccable, rated a 5 out of 5, and the atmosphere was also highly rated at 4.
The noise level was quiet, making conversation easy. The price per person was between $10–20, and we enjoyed indoor dining with no wait time.

Fantastic Noodles and Family Atmosphere
I walked in here expecting the best noodles I've ever had, and I feel fulfilled! The noodles were fantastic, and the atmosphere felt like family. Just be cautious of some of the action outside.

Amazing Noodles, Worth the Visit
I've been revisiting Hai Ky for 15 years, even after living in SF for a short while. The craft of the food here is amazing; it's a regular topic in my group chat. The broth is restrained but near perfect, and the noodles have platonic ideal textures of gloss and chewiness – glorious, bouncy, and well-dressed.
The rice noodles are especially impressive, so fresh and well-cooked. The main noodle dish is famous in South China (featured in a Netflix documentary) and especially through Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and they show the slight inflection of how we eat it in SE Asia. The condiments are also perfect, like the pristinely sliced chilis in vinegar brine.
I recommend getting the special with all the noodles and also the fried fish cake if they still have it. I'm sad to see how abandoned downtown SF and especially the Tenderloin feels now on recent visits, with many restaurants barely living. I selfishly hope they'll live on for many more years.
Support them in all ways, and please tip all the people well. Bless! 🥲
