Tasty Chinese Food, Busy Dinner Spot
My experience at Z & Y was positive. I had a tasty and quick dinner. The peking duck was great, and so were the dumplings.
The service was decent, and the restaurant gets fairly busy around dinner. It's a good place for authentic Chinese food.

Flavors Good, Lamb All Fat
My experience at the restaurant was mixed. While the flavors were present, the cumin lamb was disappointingly ALLLLL FAT, literally all fat. This was a significant letdown.
I will return, but I will likely choose a dish that is predominantly MEAT. The staff, considering the circumstances, was pleasant.

Honest Dining: Flavor Over Finesse
My experience at Z & Y Restaurant in San Francisco's Chinatown was a journey of unexpected delights. Despite its unpretentious atmosphere, which felt more like a tax office than a dining establishment, the restaurant truly shines in its culinary offerings. The proprietors seem to prioritize palate over polish, and this focus is evident in the food.
We ordered several dishes, and while the sheer abundance initially felt overwhelming, the quality of the food was exceptional. Even a surprisingly divine dessert, sweet and subtle, capped off the meal beautifully. While the chairs were notably uncomfortable, the restaurant compensates with sincerity, passion, and a touch of beautiful chaos.
It's not fine dining, but it is honest dining, which is a rare and valuable quality.

Good Food, Shocking Hidden Fees
My experience at this restaurant was a mixed bag. The food was pretty good, which was a positive aspect of the visit. However, when it came time to check out, we were hit with astounding junk fees of 10% added to our bill.
It's important to note that these were not service charges for a large group, but rather extra fees tacked onto the listed menu prices.

Solid Food, Worth the Wait
After seeing the queue, we decided to give this restaurant a try. My experience was positive overall. The food was great and tasty, though not groundbreaking 😱.
I would rate the overall experience as solid. The reviewer's metadata indicates a 4/5 for food, 5/5 for service, and 4/5 for atmosphere, with a price per person of $100+.

Tasty Lunch, Worth a Try
We visited for lunch and experienced a short wait of only 5-10 minutes. The food arrived quickly, served hot and fresh. While the flavors were tasty, they weren't exceptional.
The eggplant was noted as being a little oily. Our favorite dish was the creamy shrimp, and we also enjoyed the kung pao prawns. The menu is extensive, making it a place worth exploring, though personally, I wouldn't wait longer than 20 minutes to get in.

Great Atmosphere, Pricey Food
My experience at this restaurant was marked by a great atmosphere and a very clean environment. The food was nice, but we found it to be a bit pricy. Additionally, they charged a 10% surcharge on top of tax and tip, which I felt was too much.

Kung Pao Chicken Disappointment
My experience at the restaurant involved trying the Kung Pao chicken, which unfortunately turned out to be a disappointment. While the underlying flavor showed promise, it was unfortunately overshadowed by a strange, metallic, slightly numbing taste that lingered. This was not due to spiciness, which I enjoyed.
I'm unsure what caused this unpleasant sensation, but it was significant enough that I discarded my leftovers, something I rarely do. Everything else about the meal was fine. The restaurant was packed, leading me to believe my experience might have been unusual.
