Exceptional Dining Experience at The Peasant
They call it The Peasant, but the food is anything but. Owner/Chef Kevin Smith delivers one of the most genuinely enjoyable dining experiences I’ve had in Seattle. The whole night felt personal, like being cooked for by someone who loves what they do and wants you to love it too.
Every dish had character, balance, and was perfectly composed. The pâté en croûte was an absolute standout, rich, layered, and perfectly executed. The lamb chop was cooked rare, but was so tender you could have cut it with a spoon.
Its deep, savory crust made me wish there were two. Even the broth course, which sounded simple on paper, had incredible depth, and the unique dumpling felt comforting in the best possible way. The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a small single seating spot: relaxed, intimate, and full of life.
Watching Kevin work while chatting casually with him makes the whole thing feel less like a restaurant and more like sitting in the kitchen of a friend who happens to be an exceptional chef.

Terrific Food, Charming Ambiance
My experience at The Peasant was unique, as it's situated within a butcher shop, so don't expect a traditional fine dining atmosphere. The setup was intimate, with one person cooking, one serving, and one handling bussing and water refills. Despite the unconventional setting, the food was terrific, the service was warm, and I found the ambiance quite charming for the few tables available.
The menu is decidedly meat-forward, but a standout for me was a roast cabbage side. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and carefully composed. It's an unusual restaurant, but a very delicious experience.

Exceptional Food, Service, and Atmosphere
My experience at this restaurant was truly exceptional. I started with an heirloom tomato salad with basil vinaigrette, followed by a succulent pork cheek confit over creamy sweet corn with pickled peppers. The patè of ham with hot mustard and pickled apples was also a highlight, as was the smoked New York strip with mushroom stew, featuring a surprisingly delicious fried shallot.
For dessert, I enjoyed a delightful steamed pudding with berries and a wonderful sauce. All dishes were expertly paired with a variety of wines. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful, and the communal table experience, sharing with happy strangers, was fantastic.
We absolutely loved the whole experience. While it's an indulgence that will break the bank, it's definitely worth it for a special occasion.

Amazing Food, Service, and Atmosphere!
My experience at this restaurant was excellent. The food was amazing, with the steak cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was very relaxing, and the service and knowledge of the staff were great.
I have never been to a place to eat where the staff was so knowledgeable on all the cuts of meat and food that they served and shared with the customers. It was an excellent experience, thank you for such an amazing evening!

Intimate, Delicious, and Worth Returning
My experience at The Peasant was incredibly intimate and relaxed, thanks to the few tables occupied and the calm atmosphere. The staff were incredibly attentive and explained each dish with care, which was greatly appreciated. The meat was delicious, cooked a bit rarer than I usually prefer but still full of flavor.
The dish combinations were spot on: simple ingredients, beautifully balanced and complex without unnecessary frills. For the quality of the food, I didn’t find it overpriced at all. We went a little adventurous with our choices and are definitely planning to return to explore more of the menu.
Parking was easy, and the neighborhood is lovely for a stroll, especially in spring. Extra points for the chicken wallpaper; the ambiance is very cozy with no loud music, offering a very mature dining experience. I rarely give 5 stars, but this is one of the few places in Seattle that deserves 5 for both the food and service.

Best Ciabatta Bread Ever!
My experience at this restaurant was centered around their Como Ciabatta bread, which I found to be absolutely the best. I plan on visiting this store often on my way home from work in Mt Vernon.

Amazing Food, Disappointing Service
Our experience was truly "whelming" for lack of a better term. The food was top notch, and that cannot be reiterated enough; it's what elevated this rating to three stars. The kitchen's ability to perfectly cook a hunk of parsnip and spoon-tender beef cheeks is remarkable!
If I lived nearby, I'd be a weekly visitor. Unfortunately, the service and overall experience significantly detracted from the outing. The communal table experience was not outlined during the booking process, which was a less than ideal surprise.
While I don't mind a communal table, the lack of prior information was disappointing. The restaurant offers 4 chef counter seats and two 2-tops against the wall, which likely provided a much better experience with either kitchen interaction or privacy compared to a public table of ten. Clear distinction of these specific seats during booking would have been appreciated, and we would have happily waited for them.
Although special occasions are inquired about during booking, don't expect acknowledgment, especially when seated at a communal table. The option to add a drink pairing during booking was also forgotten without a reminder. During dinner, we were asked to reuse silverware for multiple courses without a sanitary place to set them.
Normally, these might be considered 'champagne problems, ' and I recognize that. However, when dinner and drinks cost over $200 per person, one expects not to have to place their fork on the table or remind a server about a paid beverage pairing, especially with only 17 diners present.

Exceptional Peasant Dining Experience
My experience at this restaurant was an amazing take on "peasant" dining, offering an incredible culinary journey. The wine pairings were on point, perfectly complementing the dishes. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming, enhancing the overall visit.
While all the dishes were amazing, the braised ham hock brought a touch of nostalgia from my Dad's southern cooking, making my night.

Spectacular Food, Charming Atmosphere
My experience at this restaurant was delightful! It's a cutest little restaurant with just a few tables, giving it a very intimate feel. The food was spectacular, extremely flavorful and savory.
While some might find it lacking in salt and fat balance, I was expecting this and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The wait staff was extremely friendly, though a bit slow, which I found added to the overall charm and experience. The restaurant felt more like a pop up made from love of cooking rather than a professional establishment, which I believe made the meal special.
I would wholeheartedly recommend it!

Disappointing Fine Dining Experience
For fine dining prices, I don't feel this humble place has all of the kinks worked out just yet to warrant a second visit for the $$$ point. The menu was meat forward, as the space is an add-on to their butcher shop. The flavors were good, but there was a recurring issue with food temperature.
The beef in the first course had refrigerator cool spots. A mushroom & bordelaise dish, which sounded very complex and was made with a lot of love, unfortunately was not even room temp warm. The idea of dipping cold bread into a cold bowl of sauce with cold slimy mushrooms was so unappealing I simply couldn't finish eating it.
Perhaps it was supposed to be a cold soup, but it wasn't described that way. The pork cheeks and blue cheese tart dishes were excellent. I appreciate the use of seasonal winter vegetables; however, the parsnip preparations tasted the same in every course, which became boring.
As for service, don't expect the fine dining attentiveness you'll find at other places for this price point. It definitely felt like back-of-house folks running the front-of-house. We were never given an opportunity to get cocktails or drinks of any kind; the chef simply started dropping courses.
I wasn't even greeted when I sat down. There were no silverware changes between courses; I had to wipe down my cutlery between courses so flavors from the last meal didn't seep into the next dish. I couldn't get anyone's attention to ask about the cold dish, and our waters were left mostly empty for most of the meal, with only one refill at the dessert course.
The space at the bar is very dark, too dark to 'eat with your eyes, ' which was disappointing; I hate when restaurants do that, as they're robbing you of using one of your most important senses when eating. They crammed 6 people into this tiny, uncomfortable space at the bar. Three of the patrons at the bar took up 75% of the space, and my poor friend sat scrunched up next to the cold deli case all night.
I have some severe food allergies, not the ones they can't accommodate (as they clearly state on the reservation), but others. No one called beforehand, and no one at the restaurant asked me about allergies at all. Forced to give a 20% service tip but received 5% service.
UPDATE: The childish, defensive response from the owners to this review has led me to reduce my initial review rating. Instead of listening, they chose to engage in petty, untruthful character assassination.
