Changed Ownership, Different Taste
I haven't been back since COVID and noted that the ownership and most likely the chef have changed. The dumplings were decent and fresh. However, the Xinjiang noodles did not taste the same as before.
The onion cake was okay, as were the other appetizers. The service, atmosphere, and food were all rated a 3 out of 5.

Hidden Gem with Amazing Noodles!
My experience at this restaurant was fantastic! It's a true hidden gem in the SF area. The noodle dish I tried, specifically E19, was amazingly good with a perfect texture and flavor.
I also enjoyed the skewer, which had perfect seasoning that suited my taste. I highly recommend this place!

Authentic Noodles & Dumplings - A Hidden Gem
Happy Family Gourmet is a true hidden gem on Taraval. The hand-pulled noodles have an amazing texture—springy, chewy, and clearly made fresh in-house. The cold noodles with sesame are another standout: nutty, garlicky, refreshing, and perfect on a warm day.
And the Shandong dumplings taste exactly like home cooking—authentic, juicy, and made with real care. Yes, it’s a small hole-in-the-wall spot, and some people mention the service. But the reality is it’s more of a culture barrier than bad service—the owner is genuinely friendly once you engage, and you can tell how much pride they take in their food.
If you’re looking for flashy ambiance, this isn’t it. But if you want some of the best handmade noodles and dumplings in SF, this is the place.

Authentic Northern Chinese Noodles & Dumplings
My experience at this restaurant was fantastic! I found the most authentic, fresh, handmade noodles and dumplings from northern China/Shandong right here in SF. The food was rated a perfect 5, and the atmosphere also received a 5.
It was a quiet environment, making it easy to talk. There was no wait time, and the service was excellent, also rated 5. The price per person was reasonable, ranging from $10–$20.

Standard Fast Chinese Food
My experience at this restaurant was for fast, casual Chinese food. You can't expect this place to be anything more than what it presents itself to be, so anything less than a 3 would really be unfair. They make good quality, decently portioned and priced food.
Yes, you'll feel a little rushed to get in and get out, but that's to be expected. The dumplings are handmade and what you'd expect for SF standards. The beef scallion pancake wrap was very large but not the tastiest I've had, and the noodles were hand shaved and had great texture.
Would I go out of my way to come here? Not really, but I would try at least once!

Authentic Shandong Food Gem
If you’re looking for authentic Shandong food, Happy Family is the place to go. It’s the best kind of hole in the wall restaurant: no frills, no fuss, just incredible food. You can expect dishes similar to what you’d find in a family kitchen in northern China.
The menu features bold, hearty flavors and regional specialties that are difficult to find elsewhere. The Cold Noodles were the best I've had stateside – deeply flavorful, handmade noodles, and clearly made with care. Be warned: this isn’t the place for polished service.
The staff is efficient but direct, and the focus is entirely on the food. Come hungry, come with people who love real food, and don’t expect tablecloths.

Confusing and Expensive Noodle Experience
My experience at the restaurant was confusing. While the food was good, I was surprised by the bill. I only received noodles and dumplings, two items from the menu, and was charged $40 without any drinks or other items.
I'm not sure if this was a mistake on their end, but it left me very confused.

Delicious Food and Welcoming Atmosphere
My experience at this restaurant was fantastic! The food was absolutely delicious, and the "cutest granny" in charge of the food was a highlight. She kindly offered tips on what to order and how dishes complement each other.
It was great to have someone who speaks Mandarin. The staff were friendly and engaged in conversation while the food was being served. We were also pleasantly surprised by an adorable cat that greeted us.
Overall, a wonderful dining experience.
