Disappointing Billing Experience
As a visitor from Canada, I had dinner with my mom on our first day in San Francisco. We ordered two plates that were US$11. 50 each.
When it was time to pay, the server asked if I wanted to pay with cash or card. I chose cash, and she presented a bill for US$27. 02 after tax, stating that it "doesn't include tips.
" I paid US$30 in total before leaving. Honestly, I was unaware of the sales tax rate in San Francisco and didn't realize the bill was incorrect until I returned to the hotel. The correct total should have been 2 * $11.
50 * 1. 0863 = $25. 00.
I'm unsure why the server acted this way; perhaps she assumed we were from mainland China and unfamiliar with the tipping culture, especially since we spoke Mandarin. I am aware of the tipping culture in North America and always tip when dining in, but I found this behavior unacceptable as the server lied to the customers. I doubt the owner or server will care about this review, but I advise customers to double-check the pricing before paying, regardless of payment method.

Great Hong Kong Cafe Experience
My experience at this Hong Kong style cafe was excellent. The food was great and the price was good, making it a place you can't go wrong with. The service and atmosphere were also top-notch, both receiving a perfect score.

Terrible Experience: Dish Error and Overcharging
My experience at G & Y Cafe was flat-out terrible. I ordered scrambled eggs with shrimp, but the staff brought the wrong dish and then argued nonstop, insisting I was mistaken. To make matters worse, they attempted to sneak in an extra $2 charge at checkout.
I caught the discrepancy, yet they still refused to admit their error or apologize. The establishment is totally dishonest and rude. They lie, overcharge, and don’t care.
I strongly advise avoiding this scammy place.

Unsanitary Practices and Direct Tip Requests
My experience at this restaurant was concerning due to observed unsanitary practices and the way tips were requested. I witnessed a waitress drop a water cup on the floor, then pick it up and serve it to a guest without washing it. This made me question what else might be happening behind the scenes.
Additionally, the directness of their tip requests felt as though I owed them money, which was an uncomfortable experience.

Good Value Mongolian Beef in Chinatown
My experience at G & Y was positive, especially concerning their Mongolian beef over rice. I'm on a quest for good value Mongolian beef in Chinatown, and G & Y is a top contender for me right now, balancing taste, price, and portions. While it's not their specialty, the dish is quite tasty compared to others on this street.
The service was good, and the atmosphere was also rated highly.

Awful service, decent food
My experience at this restaurant was marred by incredibly poor service. The server ASKED for a tip after taking the wrong order and provided no service at all, not even a thank you. Despite this, I was foolish enough to agree to leave a tip.
On a positive note, the food was quite good, scoring a 4 out of 5. The atmosphere was rated a 2, and the service a 1, which aligns with my experience. The wait time was non-existent, and the noise level was moderate.
The price per person was between $10–20 for dinner.

Authentic Hong Kong Style Gem
My experience at this small Chinese restaurant was spectacular. I've dined here multiple times and even brought friends who grew up in China, and they were impressed. It's a genuine restaurant, not a bakery or cafe.
I've tried several dishes, including juk, crispy noodles, ox tail, and pork chops, all of which were outstanding. While the cuisine is Hong Kong style, the quality here surpasses the average small restaurant in Hong Kong. To avoid the noon rush and potential waits, I recommend visiting slightly off-peak for a table.

Hidden Gem with Fresh, Flavorful Food
I was visiting Chinatown with my kids, who had never been before. We asked for a recommendation and were directed to this place. It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but the food was really good!
I was told it was the best Chinese food they'd ever had (besides my mom's). The food was indeed very good, fresh, and flavorful. It was also very decently priced.
They have a wider range of drinks and a diverse menu. The staff were very friendly as well. They also have a restroom for paying customers.

Authentic Hong Kong Cafe Experience
My experience at this restaurant was exactly what you would expect from a community-style Hong Kong cafe. It's a place where lots of Cantonese locals dine. The food was excellent, earning a perfect score, and the service was equally impressive with a score of 5.
The atmosphere was rated a 4, contributing to a pleasant dining experience for our group of 2 people during dinner. The price per person was between $20–30.

Classic Cantonese Cafe Experience
My experience at this Chinatown restaurant was a classic Cantonese and Hong Kong cafe dining experience. The menu is huge, ensuring you'll find something you enjoy. The food is affordable and they offer large portions.
Service is quick and efficient, typical for an HK cafe. Even when busy on weekends, the food arrives promptly. I highly recommend the preserved egg and pork porridge; it's comforting with a generous amount of preserved egg and perfectly seasoned.
The baked pork chop is another favorite, served with a large chop and a slightly tart tomato sauce. Their HK milk tea is also solid and not overly sweet.
