Mixed Experience with Service and Food Issues
My second visit to Copra, following a positive anniversary celebration, was for a birthday gathering with friends. We started with the Rasam Poori, which was great and highly recommended. However, the Perigord Black Truffle Soft Egg Appam was a disappointment; it was surprisingly sweet, and the truffle egg yolk and sweetness combination didn't work for me. I'd recommend skipping it. The Southern Kerala Shrimp Mango Curry was good, but be aware that the shrimp are served with their tails on. The Fava Bean Parippu Urundai was just okay, and might be one of the limited vegetarian options from their large section. The Lamb Shoulder Chettinad was good, and I would recommend it, though I wish the meat wasn't overcooked. For dessert, we ordered the Watalappan, a flan cake-based dish. While it tasted good, it was a bit heavy on cinnamon. Unfortunately, mid-way through eating, we discovered an eyelash in the syrup, leading us to send the dish back after just one bite. Overall, this experience was not as positive as my previous one, primarily due to the eyelash/hair in the dessert and an incident where a server moved our chair without asking to accommodate a larger party, requiring us to ask for it to be returned. The service and food didn't seem on point this time.

Disappointing Food and Service
My experience at the restaurant was disappointing. The service was not up to par, and unfortunately, the food didn't compensate for it. We ordered about six dishes, and only the fried chicken turned out to be decent. The overall food quality was poor, with most dishes failing to impress.

Delicious Food, Perfect Flavors
My experience at the restaurant was fantastic! Everything we ate was delicious. We tried the Goli Vadai, Sambal Peppers, Vadai Chaat, Chicken Biryani, and the Lamb Shoulder. Each dish was cooked perfectly and offered nice, complex flavors.

Disappointing Diwali Brunch Experience
My experience at the Diwali brunch was quite disappointing, especially considering the festive occasion and the price tag of ~$100+ for the non-veg option. While the spread was vast and the variety of dishes did an excellent job of capturing the diverse flavors of southern India, the execution was flawed. The main issue was that every item was placed in front of us at the start, creating an overwhelming visual and olfactory experience with no clear indication of what each dish was or where to begin. The table lacked the space to comfortably accommodate the ~17 dishes, leading to a stress of spilling things. By the time we tried a few, the rest had turned cold. We had to rush through courses to attempt to eat the food at the right temperature and texture, but ultimately failed for most dishes. Some items even arrived at room temperature. These factors, combined with restricted movement due to limited table space, resulted in a below-average experience. The chef's efforts and the menu deserved better planning to be truly celebrated.

Authentic Coastal Indian Flavors Delivered
As someone who grew up in a southern Indian coastal city, I’m always skeptical when restaurants claim to serve coastal flavors. Copra actually delivers. The flavors were authentic, layered, and full of spice, not just heat. You can tell every dish is made thoughtfully. The menu has a great selection with enough variety to explore without feeling overwhelming. The flavors transported me straight back home. Easily one of the best modern coastal Indian spots in SF :)

Great Food, Lacking Service
My experience at Copra was a mixed bag. The food and cocktails were absolutely bomb, and the restaurant itself was beautiful inside. However, the service was a significant letdown. Our server was extremely soft-spoken, which was difficult to manage in Copra's inherently louder atmosphere; we could barely hear her. Additionally, her recommendation for the number of dishes was ridiculous. She suggested one starter, three small plates, and four large plates for our party of four. This is unusual for a shared plates restaurant, so we opted for fewer dishes – three small and three large plates – which turned out to be more than enough. I suspect she was trying to upsell us, which I did not appreciate. Despite the service issues, I would go back for the food and drinks.

Solid Food, Service Needs Allergy Attention
My experience at this restaurant was generally positive, with decent food and a great atmosphere. The food was rated a 4 out of 5, and the atmosphere was a perfect 5 out of 5. However, the service could use some improvement, particularly when handling guests with allergies. While the overall experience was solid, this aspect of the service needs a little help.

Exceptional Indian Food Experience
My experience at this restaurant was truly transformative, especially regarding Indian food. I enjoyed wonderful cocktails; we tried three different ones, and each tasted special and was so good. The amazing food was a highlight, particularly the bone marrow masala, which featured layered spices with deep flavors. It genuinely changed my idea about Indian food.

Disappointing Portions, High Prices
My experience at this restaurant was disappointing, especially considering the price point. The quantity of food was surprisingly small, even for an upscale establishment. For plates priced at $40-$50, I expected them to be substantial enough to fill at least one person. This was my second visit after a two-year gap, and it felt like both the portion sizes and prices were better in the past. We spent $400 for five people, and it simply wasn't worth it. Specifically, paying $45 for a mere 4-inch piece of mackerel, described as a "large" plate, felt insane. While some pictures showed two pieces, we only received one tiny piece.

Disappointing South Indian Experience
My experience at this restaurant was disappointing, especially considering the chef's reputation. The South Indian food was forgettable, a stark contrast to the memorable culinary experiences I've had with Chef Srijith elsewhere. The preparations were underwhelming. While the staff was accommodating regarding our seating request for aging parents, the service staff was otherwise aloof and unfriendly. We had indicated it was a celebration, but this was neither acknowledged nor celebrated. Adding to the dissatisfaction, an automatic 20% gratuity was added with a request for an additional tip, which felt like we were not given a choice, especially when we had not intended to tip extra.
