Al's Diner: A Classic Gem
My experience at Al's was fantastic! I usually go for the chicken fried steak with a single pancake, and it's always amazing. The service is also a highlight; everyone is incredibly nice.
I particularly enjoyed their house hot sauce, which is really great and flavorful. Al's is my go-to classic diner. While many people prefer the place next door, honestly, Al's is where it's at!

Disappointing Food and Billing Issues
I'm not sure how this place has semi-good reviews. My experience was that the food was really disappointing and bland. Additionally, the check was like 25% higher than the listed menu price, and had 0 itemization/explanation.

Restaurant Closed Upon Arrival
My experience was that the restaurant was closed and not even open when I arrived. The windows were boarded up.

Great Old School Diner Experience
My experience at this neighborhood gem was fantastic! It's a no-frills, old school diner that serves up all the typical breakfast fares. The service, atmosphere, and food were all top-notch, each receiving a perfect score.

Mixed Feelings About Old Fashion Diner
I generally appreciate an old-fashioned diner experience, but this particular establishment didn't quite meet my expectations. I was seated at the front counter on a stool, which I dislike, as the table section was closed. The country fried steak was unremarkable, and I found the gravy's consistency to be too thick for my liking.
However, the hash browns, prepared in a scalloped potato style, were the highlight of the meal and absolutely perfect. Despite this, I'm open to giving the place another try and will return.

Gem of a diner with amazing hash browns!
I had a great experience at Al’s this weekend. The portions were huge and the value was great. This diner is truly a gem and rare nowadays.
Their hash brown is probably the best hash brown I’ve ever had! The owner was super nice and friendly. I’m so glad I stumbled in here and will be returning soon.

Old School Dinner Gem
This old school dinner is just what you need when you don't want to cook. It's a friendly and homey spot where you can talk with the owner about SF and get dinner recommendations. They serve breakfast all day!

Terrible Service and Overcharged
My experience at this restaurant was extremely negative. I wish I could give a zero, but the food was not that good. The main issue was the service; an old man kept insisting on a tip and stood over our table until we paid the amount he demanded, instead of just giving us the check and walking away.
He stood there until we paid. The price was also questionable, as we were overcharged without receiving a receipt. I will never come back here again.

Hygiene Concerns Overshadow Friendly Service
My experience at this small restaurant was a mixed bag. While the older gentleman who served us, whom I assume is Al, was very friendly, there were significant downsides. The kitchen and dining areas were noticeably run-down and dirty.
A major concern was the lack of hygiene: both the cook and Al handled food without gloves and did not wash their hands during our entire hour-long visit. Al touched various dirty surfaces, including pens, money, note paper, and the credit card machine, without washing his hands. Furthermore, the cookware was not washed between orders for different customers.
Al also spoke to the cook in a demeaning and degrading way. Another negative was the absence of hairnets, leading to a family member finding a hair in their eggs. To cap off the visit, Al asked what percentage tip we wanted, suggesting 15 or 20 percent, and gave an off-putting look when I chose a 10 percent tip.

Heartwarming Diner Experience with Great Food
My experience at this diner was truly heartwarming. The food was delicious and cheap, offering a classic diner feel that wasn't trying to be trendy. I especially enjoyed the hash browns, which were great.
The owner/server, an elderly gentleman, was a sweetheart. He handled a difficult situation with a couple attempting to dine and dash with incredible grace, even after being spat on. This experience made me want to support him and his restaurant even more.
I'm sure he'd appreciate the extra support from more customers. This was my first visit, but I will definitely be back!
