Seasonal Delights Worth Every Penny!
For me, the seasonal specials are the best part. During what they call 'cuaresma' (Lent), they serve delicious stuffed Huazontles. Now in September, I came for the Chiles en Nogada, and they were truly finger-licking good.
It's worth paying for them. I'll keep coming back for every special season 💗

Delicious Tortas and Pombazo!
This is a yes. I enjoyed my experience at this restaurant, especially the backyard patio. The tortas were delicious, and I particularly loved my pombazo.
The pierna torta was incredible. The aguafrescas are good, with the best being at 'la taqueria'. I will keep eating through the whole menu.

Authentic Mexican Gem in the Mission
You don’t just walk into La Torta Gorda, you get pulled in—nose first. Somewhere between the sizzling plancha and the towering jars of agua fresca, you realize this isn’t just another Mission District eatery clinging to nostalgia—it’s the real damn thing. A greasy, glorious postcard from Mexico, lovingly sent by people who never forgot how their mothers cooked.
The couple running this joint aren’t chefs—they’re culinary procurers. You see them back there, sleeves rolled, pouring heart and history into every bite like it’s a sacrament. The sazón—that mystical thing Mexicans talk about like it’s part of their DNA—is here, in spades.
It’s in the pambazos, it’s in the torta poblana, it’s in the tlacoyos, which are so good you’ll start questioning the point of every other snack you’ve ever eaten. The menu is both chaotic and comforting—like rifling through your abuela’s handwritten recipes. There’s too much to choose from, and that’s a beautiful problem to have.
You’ll stand there paralyzed, torn between the memory of your last great bite and the promise of the next one. And the place itself? Picture a cheesy neighborhood soccer shrine smashed into a kitchen from Puebla.
Soccer posters everywhere, soccer balls randomly perched above the fridge like trophies from another life. It’s loud, honest, and beautifully unpretentious. The kind of place where comfort food isn’t a marketing gimmick—it’s just food.
It’s never overcrowded, but it hums. The kind of local buzz that tells you you’re in the right place. The chilaquiles for breakfast?
They could resurrect the dead—or at least cure a hell of a hangover. So skip the trendy joints peddling $10 tacos served on slate. Go here.
Eat like you’re home, even if you’ve never been.

Delicious Pambazos Torta - A Must-Try!
I've been to this restaurant several times and consistently order the Pambazos torta, which is a chorizo and potato sandwich. It's incredibly flavorful and satisfying. I highly recommend trying it; you won't be disappointed.

Authentic Mexican Gem in the Mission
If you're craving authentic Mexican food, La Torta Gorda is a fantastic choice. My wife and I enjoyed the experience, sitting at a table in front where the Californian sun filtered through the large windows, illuminating the colorful interior. We ordered our food, which was a great chance to practice Spanish, while enjoying some soothing Latin music.
Our plates arrived with an aromatic aroma that was very appetizing. My plant-based burrito was a highlight. It was packed into a huge, faintly sweet, light, and slightly browned home-made flour tortilla.
The filling was a medley of fresh ingredients: fluffy brown rice, deep dark black beans, savory mushrooms, fresh avocado chunks, understated pico de Gallo, and lightly cooked jalapeño pepper slices that provided a subtle kick. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her Taco Placero with pollo. We finished with a pair of deliciously sweet Very Berry Smoothies, made with freshly squeezed orange juice, berries, and ice.
I highly recommend a visit for a quick lunch while touring the Mission District of San Francisco.

Favorite Tortas and Welcoming Atmosphere
My experience at this restaurant was fantastic! It’s lovely to see their long-time legacy in the community, having withstood many neighborhood changes with a loyal customer base. The wait staff are incredibly friendly and made me feel like part of their family, creating a right at home atmosphere.
I enjoyed sitting at the counter to watch the cooking in an intimate setting, and their back garden patio is also lovely and peaceful. The tortas are made with high quality ingredients and love. My favorite is the china oaxaqueña, but all tortas are filled with a wonderful blend of flavors and textures, are very filling, and not heavy or greasy.
I also love their tacos árabes, which are relatively harder to find. I am so grateful to have this gem in the mission. The only thing I would change is that they stay open later 😋.

Excellent Food, Worth a Return Visit
My experience at the restaurant was fantastic! I literally went back after lunch for dinner. The quesadillas, featuring squash blossom, huitlacoche, and tinga, were all excellent.
The torta was also excellent and was so substantial that it will likely feed me for breakfast and lunch tomorrow too. The food quality was outstanding, and the atmosphere was a perfect 5/5. The service also received a perfect 5/5 rating.
