It's been a while since I've been to a place truly worth 5 stars, but these guys absolutely earned it. The staff was lovely, the food was killer, and the portions were great. All of this at reasonable prices made for an honestly wow experience. I highly recommend getting the black pepper chicken appetizer – it was incredible!

The atmosphere was also great, rated a 5 out of 5, and the service was equally impressive at a 5 out of 5. For a group of 2 people, the price per person was between $20–30, which felt very reasonable given the quality.

My experience at this small and cozy izakaya was perfect for dining alone or with a small group of 3–4 people. I ordered appetizers from the special menu. First up was the Mentaiko Zucchini, which was so delicious! The very first bite was refreshing, followed by the rich umami saltiness of the mentaiko. A little dip in Karashi mustard made it even better—definitely a must-try! Highly recommended. Next was Kuramaebi, tiger prawns deep-fried tempura style and topped with tartar sauce. After that, I ordered Ba-ra Kushiyaki and Kobe Kushiyaki (served 2 skewers each). I especially enjoyed the Kobe—it was grilled perfectly and went really well with Shichimi Togarashi. If it had the same green onion topping as the Ba-ra, I think it would have been absolutely perfect. 😋

I had dinner here with a couple of friends and truly enjoyed our experience at Taniku Izakaya. It's a small spot with about 20 seats and operates on a walk-in basis, but we were seated without a significant wait. The menu offered a refreshing change from typical izakayas, focusing less on skewers and more on other dishes. The skewers we did try – Kobe beef, pork belly, and chicken with yuzu – were all excellent, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We also enjoyed the takoyaki and a selection of handrolls (amaebi shrimp, unagi, and hamachi), which were incredibly fresh and delicious. For my main, I had the Akamaru ramen with pork chashu. While it's usually on the spicier side, they kindly adjusted the spice level for me, and it retained its great flavor. Overall, Taniku Izakaya is a fantastic find. The cozy atmosphere, quality food, and a menu that stands out from other izakayas make it a place definitely worth checking out. I'll certainly be returning.
