Excellent Omakase Experience
My experience at this very nice Omakase restaurant in the San Francisco area was excellent. The fish was good, and some dishes were prepared differently than the usual way. The portion size was just right, not making me feel overstuffed.
The chefs clearly explained everything and were conversational in a pleasant manner. The atmosphere was rated 4, service was rated 4, and food was rated 5.

Disappointing Value for Price
My experience at this restaurant was disappointing. For the price, I felt the fish quality and the skill level of the preparation just weren't there. I understand that much of the product offered is inherently expensive, but when you consider the pricing in this range or have industry knowledge, it's clear they aren't offering anything extraordinary.
Ultimately, after tasting what they did with the ingredients, I walked away feeling disappointed.

An Amazing New Experience!
This was a completely new experience for me and my date, and everything was amazing from the entrance down to the last course. Peter, our chef, was fantastic, explaining how everything should be handled and how to properly enjoy each dish. Reservations were easy to set up, and we would definitely come back.
(GIVE THAT MAN BACK HIS MICHELIN STAR!)

Disappointing Cancellation and Lost Trust
I had high expectations for Omakase after hearing so many great things, so I canceled another reservation and booked here for Father’s Day. That’s why I was extremely disappointed to find out just three days before that my reservation had been canceled. The only notification?
A generic OpenTable message. No call, no email, no explanation. A last-minute cancellation like this without any personal outreach feels incredibly unprofessional.
I was genuinely excited to try all the restaurants under the Omakase Group—Niku, Okane, Dumpling Time but this experience has made me lose trust in their reliability and guest care. Sadly, I won’t be dining at any of their restaurants again, and I can’t recommend Omakase to others. At this price point, you’re much better off going to Kusakabe or Ju-Ni, where the service and attention to detail still match the quality of the food.
Maybe this dip in customer care explains why they lost their Michelin star in 2023 or maybe it’s what caused them to lose it in the first place. It’s starting to feel like the group’s focus has shifted more toward revenue than hospitality, especially after seeing Niku try to raise fund from the public on Gofundme for a fire that happend at their own restaurant. Really disappointing experience all around.

Confusing Meal, Fantastic Desserts
My dining experience was a peculiar one, starting from the moment we arrived. The restaurant boasts a cool waiting room, which felt like a missed opportunity for anticipation or a welcome drink. Instead, we were promptly ushered in.
The sushi counter itself was extremely minimalistic, bordering on boring, with unadorned walls. I believe adjusting the lighting could significantly enhance the atmosphere. The vibe of the other patrons was notably odd; on our visit, it was filled with individuals engrossed in their phones.
The atmosphere was further characterized by light electronica downtempo music, which the server mentioned was the owner's intentional choice. The restaurant was totally silent, leading my wife and I to whisper and eventually resort to texting each other – it was the quietest meal of my life. Service was strangely awkward.
When I requested a tea menu, the server apologized for not having one, explaining he was in the process of changing things and even brought tea from home. He repeatedly emphasized the tea's expensive importer and its 'entry-level' status, a peculiar flex. The sushi chef also seemed to focus solely on me, sternly instructing my wife to eat immediately, which felt intrusive.
We prefer to eat at our own pace. Regarding the food, it was consistently bland, with the exception of a few standout items. The initial squid bite was frankly gross.
Most dishes were indistinguishable, often featuring seared fatty cuts with oil. The soup was a basic dashi with white fish, and the scallop 'taco' was less than the sum of its parts. The lean blue fin was remarkable for being the only flavorful bite, but it was followed by more seared fatty fish.
I would suggest experimenting with leaner cuts and bolder flavors, perhaps even just adding salt. On the positive side, the crispy hand roll and blue fin tuna nigiri were great – simple, standard, and delicious. The desserts were truly fantastic, especially the brulee'd tamago "cake", which was super unique and delicious.
The fruit custard that followed was also really fantastic. However, everything else about the meal was 'off', making it an uninspired experience in a strange environment at an egregious price.

Fantastic Birthday Dinner Experience!
My experience at this restaurant was fantastic, especially as it was for my birthday celebration. The food and service were both top notch. The chefs were incredibly engaging, even playing games with us, which made the experience very fun.
They also thoughtfully provided complimentary drinks, which was a very sweet gesture. The gold dust wagyu was particularly IG worthy.

Good Sushi, Worth the Travel
My experience at this sushi place was really good. Although it's a bit further from the big conference center, this also means you will likely find a spot to reserve during a busy week. The food, service, and atmosphere were all rated a perfect 5, making for a great dining experience.
