I really wanted to like El Tucan, having heard so much about their Tijuana-style tacos. Unfortunately, my experience didn't quite live up to the hype. I tried their most talked-about items: the quesabirria, an adobada taco, and a shrimp taco.
While they looked appealing, the flavors were disappointingly flat. The meat lacked the expected depth and char, and the tortillas were greasy with little chew or structure. Nothing was bad, but nothing truly impressed me.
The salsa bar was a nice addition, though it felt limited compared to other taquerias in the city. The staff was polite, but the service was slow; I waited about 20 minutes even though the restaurant wasn't crowded. The prices also seemed steep for the quality received.
I don't mind paying for good food, but this didn't feel like a good value. I left feeling full but ultimately underwhelmed.

Best Mexican in the Castro
I have eaten here 20+ times. It is easily the best Mexican spot in the Castro and one of the better restaurants of any kind in the neighborhood. I personally like the adobada California burrito and the shrimp red taco.
I really can’t say enough good things about this place. It hits.
