Great Food and Service Despite Wait
My experience at this restaurant was very positive overall. The food and atmosphere were great, and the service was excellent. Although our 8pm reservation led to a 30-minute wait for our table, the staff was apologetic and compensated us with complimentary drinks and dishes, which were very nice.
This gesture, combined with their exceptional service, led me to give them large amounts of tips.

Exceptional Steakhouse Experience
My experience at Niku Steakhouse was truly impressive. The quality of the beef was exceptional, described as next level — tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The service was attentive without being over the top, and the atmosphere felt modern yet cozy.
Every dish was beautifully presented, and you can really taste the care that goes into everything. It was definitely one of the best steak experiences I’ve had in the Bay Area.

Extremely Expensive, Poor Value
I feel like a fool for dining here. Unless you have a lot of money to throw away, I strongly advise against this place. I'm seeking a refund for my $280 check for one person, with no alcohol.
The staff demonstrated very little skill in hospitality, customer service, and entertainment. Essentially, they are selling an 'expense. ' This restaurant would be better suited for a private country club, catering to those who want to separate themselves through high costs.
As someone who has dined globally, I found it to be a terrible experience, far too expensive for what was offered. It was a BIG waste of money at $280 per person, without drinks. You'll spend significantly more here – about $150 more per person than at places like Harris, Mastro's, or Morton's, and around $200 more per person than at top San Francisco restaurants such as Joe's or Tadich Grill.
This establishment seems designed purely to offload extra money. I wish I had something more positive to say, but WOW! I feel like a fool for spending a solid $215 extra for essentially nothing.
The only thing more foolish would have been gambling $200 at a casino. Ironically, the only entertainment value came from the bartender who, on top of the hugely expensive meal, tried to charge me $30 for iced tea refills. He seemed angry that I didn't order one of his house cocktails.
He did remove the charge, but it's head-shakingly absurd that a restaurant charging $280 would feel entitled to charge an additional $30 for iced tea. This added insult to injury, though at least that charge was removed. To be completely honest, the $120 steak, ordered medium-rare, was undercooked to rare+ and was seriously tough.
A manager asked how the steak was, and it was clear it was a rhetorical question expecting a 'yes, everything is excellent' response, similar to how Whole Foods might ask Bill Gates if he found everything okay after waiting in line. Everyone is just expected to say everything is fine.

Exceptional Evening with Perfect Food and Service
What an enjoyable and memorable evening. The service was personable, knowledgeable and attentive. My filet was perfectly cooked with a great crust from the char cooking.
The broccolini on the char grill was wonderful. My cod was also very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
We will return.

Absolutely Delicious Birthday Dinner!
I had an absolutely amazing experience celebrating my husband's birthday here. We sat at the chef's bar, which was really cool as we got to watch them prepare and plate everything. A unique touch was getting to pick our own knives for our steaks, which was super fun.
Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. I'd give it a 10 out of 10 and definitely recommend it.

Ambitious Steakhouse Lacks Execution
My experience at Niku Steakhouse, which enters San Francisco’s wagyu arena with pedigree and ambition, fusing Japanese craft with Californian fire, was unfortunately one where the kitchen and service team were out of rhythm. The meal began promisingly with a chef’s amuse of roe-topped bread, an elegant gesture displaying restraint with assertive yet not harsh brine, and the crispy pig ears that followed confirmed early confidence with their shatter-crisp texture and balanced umami. However, the trajectory faltered.
The Australian wagyu flat iron arrived underheated, making it tough and tepid. The petite lettuce salad betrayed imbalance with under-seasoned dressing and oxidized avocado, resulting in a flat palate. The broccolini was aggressively salted and bitter, and the mushrooms were sautéed past their aromatic peak.
Service failed to anchor the evening; servers were unable to articulate dish composition or pairing philosophy, often recommending the most expensive cut. Plates arrived without temperature synchronization, and the filet mignon, ordered medium, was re-fired twice, ultimately desiccated with an oxidized char. While the bones of a remarkable steakhouse are present, execution lags behind ambition.
The precision required for wagyu was absent this evening. Niku Steakhouse displays clear culinary intellect and world-class ingredients, yet lacks the disciplined consistency and sensory storytelling expected of its caliber. A recalibration of heat control, seasoning discipline, and service fluency could transform these missteps into mastery.

Exceptional Service, Memorable Meal
My experience at this restaurant was truly exceptional from start to finish. The service team deserves huge praise; we were welcomed so warmly upon arrival, setting a wonderful tone for the evening. It's clear why they have a Michelin star and are ranked among the top steakhouses globally – the service alone reflects that excellence.
Our favorite dishes were the Bushu-Gyu and the Tsukune. The Bushu-Gyu was incredibly tender, rich, and perfectly buttery and savory, melting in the mouth. The Tsukune was beautifully seasoned and juicy, offering a comforting umami balance that paired wonderfully with other dishes.
The only dish that didn't quite hit the mark was the Maitake Mushrooms, which had a slightly chemical aftertaste. However, the staff handled this with such grace, removing it from the bill without hesitation, which we greatly appreciated. Their attentiveness was remarkable.
The Wagyu Flat Iron had a nice char but was a bit too bitter for our personal taste. The staff noticed our reaction and thoughtfully offered a palate cleanser on the house, which was a great touch. To top off the evening, as I was celebrating my birthday, they surprised us with a delicious semifreddo cake – a sweet and thoughtful gesture that made the night even more memorable.
I felt genuinely valued throughout our visit. The combination of food, service, and attention to detail clearly explains their accolades. We will definitely be returning, as it's rare to find a restaurant that not only serves incredible food but also listens and responds so thoughtfully to its guests.
Totally deserving of the star!

Exceptional Wagyu with a Japanese Touch
My experience at this restaurant was truly exceptional, especially for anyone seeking a properly cooked true Wagyu. The establishment offers a unique blend of American steakhouse vibes with a refined Japanese polish. It's an ideal spot for various occasions, from date nights and celebrations with friends to any evening that calls for a special treat.
We enjoyed the bushu-gyu from Saitama, which was a delightful change from the usual Miyazaki beef found in the Bay Area. They also boast a fantastic selection of both import and local dry-aged beef. To fully appreciate the protein, I'd recommend pairing it with an adequate amount of acidic salad and seafood to cleanse your palate between bites.

Delicious Food, Excellent Experience
My experience at this restaurant was excellent. The food was delicious, and I even tried new things I wouldn't normally. Everything was great and filled me up.
The atmosphere and service were both rated a perfect 5, and the noise level was quiet, making it easy to talk. I had no wait time.

Exceptional Food, Disappointing Exit
My experience at Niku Steakhouse in San Francisco was for a friend's birthday celebration, and we were in a festive mood. I must say, Niku is the single best steak house I have had the pleasure of experiencing. The food was truly exceptional, and the service was elegant and attentive.
It was the perfect evening, until we were asked to leave for the next reservation. We had finished dinner and dessert and would have stayed for another 3-5 minutes. I hope that next table justified the loss of our future business.
At this level of dining, there are many restaurants in the Bay Area that we will be enjoying.
