Q. What is cumin made out of?

A. Cumin is the dried fruit of a small annual herb (cuminum cyminum), which is a member of the parsley family. It probably originated in the eastern Mediterranean (there are references to it in the Bible), but is now grown throughout Asia as well. It is very popular in Middle Eastern, Asian, Mediterranean, and Latin American cooking — a pretty universal spice!
